How to Block or Limit TikTok on Chrome
Last updated:

Quick answer
Chrome has no per-site timer and no built-in block for TikTok. Install SiteKeeper, add www.tiktok.com, and set 10 minutes for a daily cap or 0 hours and 0 minutes to block the site.
Family Link, Chrome's URLBlocklist policy, the hosts file, and router or DNS filtering can block TikTok without an extension. None of them is a daily minute budget in ordinary Chrome.
Limit or block TikTok with SiteKeeper
SiteKeeper keeps that budget in desktop Chrome. It is privacy-first; we never sell or share your data. It is a Chrome extension only: limits and history do not sync, and there is no phone app.
Set a daily limit, for example 10 minutes
Do this from the popup while the tab is on www.tiktok.com. The same controls take any other daily cap.
1Install SiteKeeper in Chrome
Install SiteKeeper from the Chrome Web Store. The toolbar badge then shows today's minutes for the site in the active tab.
2Open the popup on www.tiktok.com
Go to
www.tiktok.comand click the SiteKeeper icon. The popup shows today's time on the active tab's hostname and Set Limit. Confirm it sayswww.tiktok.com. Saving stores that exact hostname.
The popup on www.tiktok.com shows today's time on this hostname and Set Limit. The time is demo data. 3Turn on Limit Web Time and set 10 minutes
Click Set Limit and turn Limit Web Time on. Choose the 10m preset, or set 0 hours and 10 minutes. The other daily presets are 30m, 1h, 2h, and 3h. Hours run from 0 to 23 and minutes from 0 to 59.

Limit Web Time is on for www.tiktok.com, with the 10-minute daily preset. 4Click Save Changes
Click Save Changes. The popup stores the hostname it is showing,
www.tiktok.com. Atiktok.comrow never fires, because that name redirects away. When today's time reaches the limit, this tab and later top-level visits open the block page. The counter resets at local midnight.
Block TikTok completely with a 0-minute limit
There is no separate always-block list. A daily limit of 0 hours and 0 minutes is the block.
1Turn Limit Web Time on for www.tiktok.com
Use the same popup, still on
www.tiktok.com. Turning the switch off removes the limit. It does not mean block forever.2Leave the daily fields at 0 and 0
Clear any preset so both daily fields stay at 0, then click Save Changes. With the switch on and both fields at 0, the daily budget is zero seconds.
3Open TikTok once
The block starts after one visit. That first load can show TikTok for about a second, then redirect. Later visits open the block page immediately, including on later days.
Add a weekly limit
A weekly limit is optional and free, on the same screen. Hours run from 0 to 168, plus minutes. Presets are 3h, 7h, 14h, 21h, and 28h. The week is Monday through Sunday, and the host blocks when that week's time hits the cap, even if today is under the daily limit. One hostname is one of six free sites whether you set daily, weekly, or both. Pro removes the cap ($4.99/mo, $24.99/yr, $29.99 lifetime).
Seven days at 10 minutes add up to 70 minutes, so the 3-hour preset never fires while the daily cap stays at 10. Type 0 hours and 30 minutes if the week should stop you sooner.
Block TikTok during work hours
Open Advanced Settings (Time Windows) in the popup. That opens the full settings page. Click Add Window, pick Workdays, Weekends, or All, then a start and an end on the same day. A window cannot cross midnight, so 9:00 PM to 1:00 AM is two windows.
A window limit counts only time inside that window. Set 0 hours and 0 minutes to block www.tiktok.com for the whole window, such as Monday to Friday, 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Daily and weekly limits still apply outside the window, and inside a window that has no limit of its own.
What you see when time runs out
The page is titled Time's Up. It names www.tiktok.com and the reason (daily, weekly, or time window) and shows time used against the limit, including weekly numbers when a weekly limit is set. Extend Session is +5m, +15m, +30m, and +1h. Add Time & Unblock adds that amount to the saved limit. It is not a snooze: 10 minutes plus 15 stays 25 until you lower it.
Continue to Website stays disabled until the cap is no longer exceeded. Show Usage History is 7 days. You can turn the limit off or disable the extension. There is no password. If you need a real lock, for a child or for yourself, use Family Link, the Chrome policy, the hosts file, or DNS below.

TikTok hostnames, feeds, and what the limit covers
On desktop Chrome, TikTok is one hostname. The feeds you scroll are paths on that host, and they share one clock.
Save www.tiktok.com, not the names that only redirect
tiktok.com returns a 301 to www.tiktok.com. On desktop Chrome, m.tiktok.com returns a 302 to www.tiktok.com. Share links on vm.tiktok.com and vt.tiktok.com return a 302 to a video or photo page on www.tiktok.com. The popup then shows www.tiktok.com. That row records time and fires.
tiktok.com, m.tiktok.com, vm.tiktok.com, and vt.tiktok.com do not stay open, so a row for one never records time, and adding it spends a free slot. In Settings, Limited Sites, Add Site, Enter Custom Website, type www.tiktok.com in full. The dialog says to omit http:// and www. That hint is wrong for TikTok.

For You, LIVE, Explore, and profiles share the limit
For You (/foryou or /), Following, Explore (/explore), LIVE (/live), a profile (/@name), a video (/@name/video/<id>), and messages are all www.tiktok.com. You cannot limit only LIVE, only For You, or only one creator.
Path Analysis is opt-in and only tracks. Turn it on for www.tiktok.com to see time on /foryou, /explore, /live, or a profile. Free covers 3 hostnames and a tree 2 levels deep, even though the popup labels the control PRO. Pro shows 10 levels and removes the 3-host cap.
One row in Limited Sites and in the weekly ranking
Limited Sites and the weekly ranking list www.tiktok.com once. LIVE, profiles, and For You are paths on that row, not extra hostnames.

Autoplay keeps going after counting pauses
Videos autoplay and loop. Time ticks once a second on the active tab of the focused window, and only while you are active. Scrolling, trackpad swipes, and clicks count. After 15 seconds without keyboard or mouse input, or when the screen locks, counting pauses even if a video keeps looping. A background tab is not counted, so 10 minutes on the limit can take longer on the clock. For a hard stop, use 0 minutes.
Embedded players on other sites stay up
A TikTok player on another site is an iframe. It is not blocked and not counted. Only a top-level load of www.tiktok.com is.
Incognito, other browsers, and the TikTok app
SiteKeeper has no official Incognito support. Chrome leaves extensions off there unless you turn on Allow in Incognito at chrome://extensions, under SiteKeeper, then Details, and we do not promise that mode. Set IncognitoModeAvailability to 1, or use Family Link, to close Incognito. The extension does not run in the TikTok app, and limits do not sync.
The app has its own screen time settings: a daily screen time control, a 60-minute default on teen accounts that a passcode can bypass, and Family Pairing for parents. None of that caps Chrome.
Block TikTok without an extension
None of these four options is a per-site TikTok timer in ordinary Chrome. Use one when the Time's Up page must not be able to undo the block.
Family Link on a supervised account
In the Family Link app, open the child, then Controls, then Google Chrome and Web, then Manage sites, then Blocked sites. Add www.tiktok.com and include the www. Add the domain tiktok instead if you want every subdomain, including www, m, vm, and vt.
Android and Chromebook are fully supervised. On Windows, Mac, and Linux it applies only while the child is signed into that Chrome profile, and they can sign out or use another browser. Family Link blocks. It has no TikTok daily timer in Chrome.
Chrome URLBlocklist policy
URLBlocklist works on a personal computer and needs an administrator. It blocks matching URLs and has no time limit. A bare domain also matches its subdomains, so the filter tiktok.com covers www, m, vm, and vt in one entry.
On Windows, add a string value under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Google\Chrome\URLBlocklist. Name 1 is tiktok.com. On macOS, deliver the same policy with a configuration profile for com.google.Chrome. On Linux, put a JSON file in /etc/opt/chrome/policies/managed/:
{
"URLBlocklist": ["tiktok.com"]
}Open chrome://policy and reload. Chrome then shows that this device is managed by your organization. Set IncognitoModeAvailability to 1 to turn Incognito off. URLAllowlist excepts a more specific filter, and the more specific one wins. The block is Chrome-only.
Hosts file on this computer
The hosts file stops those names from resolving for every browser on that computer. It has no schedule, no time limit, and no wildcards, so each name below needs its own line. On Windows, edit C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts in Notepad opened as administrator. On macOS and Linux, edit /etc/hosts with sudo.
0.0.0.0 tiktok.com
0.0.0.0 www.tiktok.com
0.0.0.0 m.tiktok.com
0.0.0.0 vm.tiktok.com
0.0.0.0 vt.tiktok.comFlush DNS afterward. On Windows run ipconfig /flushdns. On macOS run sudo dscacheutil -flushcache and sudo killall -HUP mDNSResponder. Clear Chrome at chrome://net-internals/#dns and restart it. A VPN or a proxy can bypass the file.
Router or DNS filtering
Block TikTok in the router's parental controls or with a filtering DNS service. Every device on that Wi-Fi is covered, including the phone app, and some routers can schedule it. Mobile data is not. The app also calls content-delivery hosts, so a single tiktok.com rule may leave it playing. A TikTok toggle in a filtering service usually covers that longer list.
Chrome's Use secure DNS setting (Settings, Privacy and security, Security) or a VPN can bypass the router. Point secure DNS at the same provider, or turn it off.

When to block TikTok and when to limit it
Use 0 hours and 0 minutes when TikTok should not open. Use 10 minutes when you still want a short visit. The cap is active time, so a looping video can run longer than 10 minutes on the clock.
A 0-minute window, Monday to Friday 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, blocks those hours, and the daily limit still applies in the evening. If you will click +15m on Time's Up, use Family Link, URLBlocklist, or the hosts file.
Troubleshooting
If TikTok still opens, check that the row is www.tiktok.com, then Incognito, then whether you are in this Chrome profile.
TikTok still opens after you set a limit
Cause: The row is not www.tiktok.com, or Limit Web Time is off. A tiktok.com row never matches.
Fix: Check the popup on www.tiktok.com and delete any tiktok.com row.
TikTok flashes, then the block page appears
Cause: The first visit with a 0-minute limit can load for about a second.
Fix: Later visits should open Time's Up. If not, set the daily fields back to 0 and 0.
A vm.tiktok.com or vt.tiktok.com link still plays
Cause: Those hosts only redirect. The www.tiktok.com limit is missing or not reached.
Fix: Save the limit on www.tiktok.com, and do not add a row for the short-link host.
An embedded TikTok on another site still plays
Cause: Embeds are not blocked and are not counted.
Fix: Use URLBlocklist, the hosts file, or DNS filtering.
A looping video ran much longer than 10 minutes
Cause: Idle time after 15 seconds is not counted, and neither is a background tab.
Fix: Use a 0-minute daily limit when TikTok should stop at the first open.
It works in a normal window, not in Incognito or in the TikTok app
Cause: The extension is desktop Chrome only and off in Incognito by default.
Fix: Close Incognito with policy or Family Link. For the app, use DNS filtering that covers more than tiktok.com.
Frequently asked questions
Can Chrome block TikTok without an extension?
Not on a normal profile. Family Link, URLBlocklist, the hosts file, and router or DNS filtering can block it. None of them is a 10-minute timer in ordinary Chrome.
Does one limit on www.tiktok.com cover short links and m.tiktok.com?
On desktop, tiktok.com, m.tiktok.com, vm.tiktok.com, and vt.tiktok.com redirect to www.tiktok.com. One www row covers them after the redirect.
Can I limit only the For You feed, only LIVE, or only one creator?
No. They are paths on www.tiktok.com and share one clock. Path Analysis only shows the split.
Why is a 10-minute TikTok limit longer than 10 minutes on the clock?
Counting pauses after 15 seconds without input, including while a video loops. A 0-minute daily limit is the hard stop.
Will SiteKeeper block TikTok in Incognito or in the phone app?
No. Incognito is not officially supported, and the extension does not run in the app. TikTok's own screen time settings are separate from SiteKeeper.
What does Add Time & Unblock change on a 10-minute limit?
It raises the saved limit. Adding 15 minutes to a 10-minute cap makes it 25 until you set it back.
Can I block TikTok during work and allow 10 minutes in the evening?
Yes. A 0-minute weekday window blocks work hours, and the daily limit still applies afterward. A window cannot cross midnight.
Will this stop a child from opening TikTok?
No. There is no password. On a computer, Family Link applies only in the supervised Chrome profile. URLBlocklist stays with that Chrome install.
Set a TikTok limit in Chrome
Open www.tiktok.com, turn on Limit Web Time, and set 10 minutes or 0 minutes. Daily limits, weekly limits, and time windows are covered on website time limits, and you can install SiteKeeper from the Chrome Web Store.
